Since the beginning of the 1980s, the General Assembly, the ECOSOC and the Commission for Social Development (CSD) have been reviewing UN plans and programs pertaining to the situation of the family. In order to bring the subject of the family into international dialogue and underline the importance of the family to the social network in every country, the General Assembly proclaimed 1994 as the International Year of the Family (IYF) with the theme
"the Family: resources and responsibilities in a changing world".
The Division for Social Policy and Development of the UN Secretariat works to raise awareness of the importance of the family in international cooperation. The Division prepared the 10th anniversary of the International Year of the Family in 2004.
The United Nations Trust Fund on Family Activities supports development programs in the field of the family.

Yearbook of the United Nations, provides an overview of the United Nations work in the field of the family with a detailed subject index. A complete collection of yearbooks is held by the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, Uppsala, and the Libraries at UN Headquarters in New York and Geneva.
