Background Information

© United Nations

The United Nations was created in 1945 with the purpose "to save the coming generations from the scourge of war". Since then it has faced new challenges and areas of concern.

Today, nearly every nation in the world belongs to the UN: membership totals 193 countries. The United Nations is not a world government and it can only act according to the decisions of its member states. Therefore, it becomes a forum for negotiations providing peaceful means of resolving international conflicts and formulate policies on matters affecting all of us.

According to the Charter, the UN has four purposes:

  • to maintain international peace and security
  • to develop friendly relations among nations to cooperate in solving international problems and in promoting respect for human rights
  • to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations
